BTS Challenges the Grammys’ New Asian Pop Category

BTS has reportedly withdrawn its comeback album Arirang from Grammy consideration in protest against the newly created Best Asian Pop Music Performance category. The group’s position is that separating Asian pop from the general field risks marginalising the artists the award is intended to recognise.

The decision brings an important cultural debate into the awards conversation. Genre categories can provide visibility, but classifications built around geography or identity may also reinforce the idea that certain artists exist outside mainstream pop. BTS’s response asks whether recognition represents genuine inclusion when it comes with a separate label.
