New York’s Museum of Modern Art opens It’s Alive! A Century of Animation from the Collection today, bringing together a hundred years of experiments in movement, illustration and visual storytelling. The exhibition spans early characters such as Felix the Cat and Gertie the Dinosaur, postwar avant-garde films, Sesame Street animator Jane Aaron and MTV’s defining 1980s campaigns.

Drawing from MoMA’s holdings across 13 animation techniques, the show presents 20 films without sound inside the gallery, encouraging visitors to concentrate on the images themselves. By positioning animation alongside the museum’s wider art collection, It’s Alive! celebrates the medium as a serious and extraordinarily varied form of artistic expression.
